DOCUMENTARY SUMMARY
For centuries, millions of people of various backgrounds and religious beliefs have studied the Hebrew Bible. But how often do these people take a step back from the text itself and ask themselves who really wrote this text that has been considered sacred for so long. One belief is that Moses wrote the first five books of the Hebrew Bible, but through this mini-series we hope to shed light on another possibility that not everyone has been exposed to before. This is the Documentary Hypothesis.
In this documentary mini-series we attempt to answer the question of “who really wrote the Torah” as well as many others about the text of the Torah and its origins. “The Documentary Hypothesis: An Epic Mini Series” takes viewers on a journey of biblical proportions as we call on archeology, historical texts and expert scholars to define and explain the Documentary Hypothesis and its four sources.
“The Documentary Hypothesis: An Epic Mini Series” is broken up into five ninety-minute segments consisting of an introduction episode and one episode devoted to each of the four sources. In the introduction episode, we will introduce the audience to the topic and explain how source criticism is a method of studying the texts of the Hebrew Bible that focuses on identifying the earlier written sources that were later combined to form the books of the Torah and how it is an academic/anthropological approach to studying the Hebrew Bible. We will discuss how this differs from the theological approach as well. We will go into depth on why scholars believe this to be true and their evidence for why they think that. It will cover doublets, discrepancies, themes, and theologies and examples of how this leads them to believe that there were multiple authors. For example, one account of the flood says it lasted one hundred and fifty days while the other said it lasted forty days and forty nights. The documentary will discuss more examples like this one. In our discussion of source criticism and the documentary hypothesis, we will also discuss the idea of the redactor, and who that is and why he or she may have edited things the way that they did. We will also introduce each of our expert scholars and explain a little of their background. We will also introduce the four actors that will represent the four sources. Each of our scholars are highly qualified in their fields of study and widely respected throughout the theological community. Our scholars varying points of view and schools of thought lead to thought provoking discussion and analysis that will cause viewers to think in new and different ways about these ancient texts.
Our star-studded cast includes Owen Wilson, Ian McKellen, Johnny Depp and Matthew McConaughey, each one selected specifically to represent their source and their respective writing traits. Each of the four source oriented episodes will focus on the various characteristics of each source as well as which parts of each book was written by them. It will cover all of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible known as the Torah or the Pentateuch. The Torah will be directly referenced to show examples of each source, and our experts will provide critical insight and knowledge on each quote and how it fits in with each source. Throughout the documentary, we include examples of source criticism and analyze every possible angle of the documentary theory to determine and shed light on the authors of the Torah. We will explore specific examples and compare conflicting or similar stories that come from the different sources and why it may be that there are two different versions or accounts of a single event or why one source may tell something different than the other. One example explored in the series would be Genesis 1 versus Genesis 2-3. The series is meant to broaden people’s knowledge on the subject and provide a new outlook on the question of who wrote the Bible. “The Documentary Hypothesis: An Epic Mini Series” will be intriguing to any and all viewers who will come away from the series with a new view on the Torah and its origins.
